An Easy Method to Avoid Kidney Stones
While I have heard plenty of horror stories regarding the pain and misery associated with a kidney stone, I've been lucky enough to avoid one up to this point in my life. In an effort to keep it that way, I'll definitely be following this simple lifestyle guideline:
Drinking more water. More than I want. More than I think I need.
I already make a point of sipping water throughout the day, recognizing the extensive health benefits of staying hydrated, but a report in the latest issue of the Annals of Internal Medicine suggests that people should seek to drink liquid in "excessive amounts" -- enough to produce two liters of urine per day.
Studies have shown that individuals who drink higher amounts of fluids can cut their risk for kidney stones by as much as 50 percent.
Unless you take it to an absolutely ridiculous extreme, there is basically no risk involved with drinking a ton of water everyday. But the perks don't stop with decreased likelihood for those horrible kidney stones. Staying hydrated also boosts your metabolism, increases your energy, promotes cardiovascular health, cleanses toxins and assists your workout efforts.
So drink up!
